Haiti Quake Relief Update: Special Offering
Thank you for sharing! You have generously contributed over $37,000 to our Special Offering for Haiti Relief. The Session of Pinnacle Presbyterian Church has authorized the immediate distribution of $18,500 of these funds to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance for use in its efforts in Haiti.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has had a Disaster Assistance Co–ordinator on the ground in Haiti as a part of the initial response team of an ecumenical alliance of Christian churches and has been focusing its Haiti efforts on distribution of food and medical supplies; and medical attention for those injured survivors.
PDA has already advanced over $500,000 for Haiti relief and recently announced that over $200,000 has been provided to Sainte Croix Hospital and Nursing School in Leogone, Haiti, a community of 50,000 people 30 miles from Port–au–Prince that was devastated by the quake. Several members of our church have visited this facility, which is jointly supported by the Presbyterian Church and Episcopal Diocese of Haiti, and are aware it was and is the only medical facility in Leogone. Most of the funds have been used to provide supplies and equipment the hospital needs to perform emergency surgical procedures and deliveries.
The remaining funds are being held pending contact with Pastor Luc Deratus of Harmony Ministries about the conditions at the Haitian missions we have been supporting. Unfortunately, the quake took a severe toll on its facilities and congregations.
The school and church in Leogone was destroyed, as was the vast majority of the campus in Citie Militaire. Several parishioners were killed when the Port–au–Prince Church collapsed. We understand the children had left school when the quake hit.
We are in communication with other churches supporting Harmony, including the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, N.J., and Rev. Mac Schafer’s congregation in Raleigh, N.C., and as soon as we have an opportunity to speak directly with Pastor Luc — hopefully in the next few days — we will report to you plans for addressing the needs of this mission ministry.
