Olivier Messiaen's Quartet For the End of Time, composed and premiered in a German POW camp in 1941, is one of the most profound musical monuments of the 20th century. Scored for piano, violin, cello, and clarinet, the work was performed by and for Messiaen's fellow prisoners. The work is a reminder of the triumph over the incomprehensible madness of war.
