Care For Our Common Home: Science, Faith, “The System” and “Us”

In his encyclical Laudato Si’ – Care for Our Common Home,  Pope Francis addresses “every person living on this planet” and provides a sweeping overview of the interconnected issues of climate change, environmental degradation, the poor, today’s fast-pace technocratic society, and the urgent need for a response, especially from a faith perspective. In her talk, Dr. Hirschboeck will weave together the main themes of the Pope’s message with insights from tree-rings, climate science, spirituality, and her personal journey as a professor, scientist, and person of faith.

Katie Hirschboeck, PhD is an Emeritus Associate Professor of Climatology with the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the University of Arizona, and also a “Catholic Climate Ambassador” for the Catholic Climate Covenant whose mission is to inspire and equip people and institutions to care for creation and care for the poor.

The Faith and Science Roundtable meets on the “First Thursday” of each month to discuss issues at the interface between faith and science in a respectful environment where it is ok to be a novice, an expert or somewhere in between. All who are interested in the conversation, including youth, are welcome to attend.
