Echoes (of the Word)

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars you have set in their course…

Astronomers announced the discovery of a void of empty space stretching across 300 million light-years. That may not sound too astounding, but it should.

What is man that you should be mindful of him? The Son of Man that you should seek Him out?

A light-year is the distance light travels through space in a year at 18,326 miles per second. In other words, a light-year is 6 trillion miles long, and the void which has been discovered is 300 million light-years wide or 1800 trillion miles. How small is our fragile planet on the vast, uncharted sea of the universe?

You have made man but a little lower than the angels; you adorn him with glory and honor.

If you still need help getting your mind around the size of a void 300 million light-years wide, consider this: 2000 galaxies the size of our own Milky Way would fit within it. In comparison to the size of such a universe, what are we?

You give man mastery over the works of your hands; you put all things under his feet:

As vast as the universe may be, man is far greater and far more glorious. The universe does not know that it exists; we do. The universe is not free to act; we are. The universe does not love; we do.

O Lord our Governor, how exalted is your Name in all the world!
